On Fasting

A New Tool

Recently listened to a podcast with Peter Attia and Jason Fung on the topic of fasting. I’ve been a fan of Peter Attia’s for a bit now but I have not read or listened to his work lately. While Peter is still a big advocate of low carb diets, he’s also evolving to include time restricted eating patterns into his framework.

He put together a great summary of his framework. I strongly encourage you to watch it.

I didn’t know much about Jason Fung until the interview. After listening to the interview and reviewing Peter’s framework, I’m sold on fasting. I bought Jason’s book on fasting which is a good read.

I’ve started to move towards a One Meal A Day eating pattern as a result. For the week, I plan on eating in a 2 hour window (ideally a 1 hour) to start. I then plan to reduce down even further by removing dinners on monday, wednesday and friday. Eventually.

But to start, I’m just going with the OMAD plan for the week.

My goals are to adopt behaviours that I can maintain for the rest of my life. I’ve tried the low carb diet for long stretches which, while effective, was difficult to stick with. Ironically, I think giving myself fewer “outs” will help me to stay with my plan. I tend to slip easily when given too many opportunities. Removing those opportunities through a hard and fast rule around eating timing should be more my speed.

I’m also sticking with low carb as a guideline but not giving up on myself if I’m not 100% compliant.

At least that’s the plan.

To be continued.
